NC leaders raise voice for single identity

KATHMANDU, JUN 06 – In a sign of growing dissents within the Nepali Congress (NC), indigenous leaders of the party have started to raise their voices for single identity.
More than 100 NC indigenous leaders, under the leadership of former lawmaker Indra Bahadur Gurung, presented a memorandum to party President Sushil Koirala on Wednesday urging him to become serious on the issue of ethnicity. However, he made it clear that the indigenous leaders of NC have not considered forming a separate party.

Singular ethnic identity, ethnic prerogatives and complete proportional system, are some of the demands mentioned in the 11-point memorandum. “We do not want the party to stick to the status quo on the issue of identity. Party President Koirala said he is serious about it,” said Gurung.
Nevertheless, Gurung said that no one in the party has proposed to split the party. “We have no intension of forming an ethnic party. It is not possible in the context of Nepal,” said Gurung.ekantipur
