Students demonstrate in front of Kathmandu campuses against petro price hike

Thirteen student unions affiliated to different political parties continued their phase-wise protest programs against the government decision to hike prices of petroleum products on Sunday.

As part of previously announced anti-government protest program, they organised sit-in demonstration in front of government colleges in the capital and many parts of the country this morning demanding roll back of state-owned Nepal Oil Corporation’s decision to hike prices of petroleum products.

The students demonstrated by chanting slogans against the government for hiking the prices of petroleum products at Amrit Science College, Tri Chandra, RR Campus, Pashupati Multiple Campus and Mahendra Ratna Campus in the capital from 9:30 am to 10 am today morning.

Although the students didn’t express their displeasure against the price hike by burning tyres or clashing with the police like they had done last week, however their demonstration threw the rush hour traffic of the Valley in disarray.

Saying that the latest hike in fuel prices has only added to the financial burden of the students as well as general public amid growing inflation, the students have been staging protest demonstration in front of different government colleges in the Capital Kathmandu and many major towns across the country. Students also enforced indefinite bandh in Sunsari district on Friday against petro price hike.

Eight youth organisations aligned to the major political parties including the ruling UCPN (Maoist) have also announced series of protest programmes against the massive hike in the prices of the petroleum products. nepalnews.com
