JANAKPUR, Sep 12: Farmers of Sapahi — the native village of President Dr Ram Baran Yadav – have launched strike, protesting the government apathy toward farmers in Tarai. They obstructed traffic along Janakpur-Dhalkebar road for four hours on Sunday, demanding that the government ensure easy availability of fertilizers, seeds and pesticides. The agitating farmers demonstrated with
agricultural tools like plow and spade from early in the morning.
They also chanted slogans against the local administration.
Ram Dev Yadav, a local farmer, said farmers from more than a dozen villages had taken to the streets. He said the strike has been launched to pile pressure on the government to control black-marketeering of chemical fertilizers. “We´ve been demanding the local administration to provide fertilizers, seeds and pesticides to farmers at a concessional price,” added Yadav.
The Sapahi farmers are also demanding that the government find market for their produces and punish people creating artificial shortage of chemical fertilizers, seeds and pesticides.
“We were compelled to launch strike after the local administration repeatedly turned a deaf ear toward our verbal and written complaints,” said another farmer Raghu Nandan Yadav.
