UCPN (M) for promulgating constitution by May 27; sticks to 11-state model

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the UCPN-Maoist Standing Committee members close to the establishment faction led by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Vice Chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Monday decided to promulgate a new constitution meeting the May 27 deadline with 11-Pradesh model for federalism.

After the meeting, Spokesperson Dinanath Sharma told the media that the Maoist party was for promulgating the new constitution at any cost even if the parties failed to forge consensus on the disputed issues of federal states.

According to Sharma, federalism based on identity and capability would be featured in the new constitution.

He further said the party decided to handover the responsibility of addressing the unresolved issues related to federal states to a transitional parliament that would come into the being after the promulgation of new constitution and dissolution of Constituent Assembly.

He expressed his hope that the parties would be able to strike a deal on the matter in a day or two.

The meeting was held at the Maoist Parliamentary Party office in Singha Durbar after the major three parties –UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML– held talks for four hours this afternoon and chalked out a deal on federalism with an understanding to build up 11 Pradeshes.

After the internal meetings, the three parties and United Democratic Madhesi Front are holding a joint meeting at Maoist Chairman Dahal’s residence in Lazimpat.TIKA R PRADHAN,THT
