Madhesi Morcha claimed that the arrest of MJF-G Chairman J.P.Gupta was an attempt to suppress the Madhesi movement.

KATHMANDU, Feb 26: The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has taken strong exception to the verdict of the Supreme Court that convicted J P Gupta, the chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (Republican), of corruption terming it as yet another attack on the Madhesi movement.

The UDMF, an alliance of five Madhesi parties, met for the first time after Gupta´s conviction on February 14. “The verdict that convicted Gupta is a part of a series of attacks by all state mechanisms on the Madhesi movement aimed at frustrating the movement and discourse on federalism,” said Vice-chairman of Sadbhawana Party Laxman Lal Karna after the meeting.

The meeting also decided to try to seek a legal remedy to the verdict. The Supreme Court last week handed down one and a half years jail and a fine of Rs 8.4 million on Gupta.

In a separate context, the meeting also decided to urge the government to file an application to vacate the apex court decision staying a Home Ministry circular to all District Administration Offices (DAOs) to give citizenship certificates to children of those who have acquired citizenship by birth.

MPRF-R not to send minister to replace Gupta

MPRF-R has decided not to send minister in place of Gupta, who was Minister for Information and Communications.

A central committee meeting of MPRF-R on Sunday concluded that the party should send Gupta´s replacement only after holding talks with the prime minister about Madhesi issues raised in the four-point agreement.

“We will not send Gupta´s replacement if we are not convinced by the government´s view regarding implementing the four-point agreement signed with the govenrment and the Supreme Court´s recent stay orders on citizenship issue and recruitments of Madhesi youths in the Nepal Army (NA),” said MPRF-R General Secretary Atmaram Sah.

MPRF-R on Saturday decided to form a three-member talks team headed by Acting Chairman Rajkishor Yadav to hold talks with government and constituent parties of the Madhesi alliance. from republica&kekantipur
