Days ahead of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s weekend India visit and a planned lunch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union home minister P. Chidambaram accused Pakistan of being “in denial mode” about the arrest and interrogation of Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba founder Hafiz Saeed, considered the mastermind behind 26/11.
India Tuesday welcomed Monday’s announcement by the United States of a $10 million bounty for the capture of Saeed, 61, under its “Rewards for Justice” programme. Mr Chidam-baram said Pakistan had “more than enough material” to detain and interrogate Saeed for his role in 26/11, and that Islamabad wasn’t “doing its duty”. The US decision, he said, should prod it into taking action. “Pakistan can’t go through with this farce of a trial” (of Saeed), the home minister added.
The US on Monday also offered a $2 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Saeed’s deputy and brother-in-law Abdul Rahman Makki. The US deems both JuD and LeT as “foreign terrorist organisations” and has individually designated Saeed and Makki for terrorist activities under its law.
There is speculation here on whether the Hafiz Saeed matter will be raised during Dr Singh’s discussions with Mr Zardari, who is coming to India on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer. Prior to that, he will have lunch with Dr Singh at the PM’s 7 Race Course Road residence here.
Mr Chidambaram said Tuesday the Sunday meeting might not be the right time to raise the matter as Mr Zardari will be on a religious visit here. He noted during his Pakistan visit he had handed over a complete dossier on Saeed to the authorities, including CDs on his anti-India speeches, and sought his voice samples.
