KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday appointed Nepal’s Gyan Chandra Acharya the Under Secretary-General for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN- OHRLLS).



Acharya is serving as the Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations in New York.

“We have just learned that His Excellency Mr. Gyan Chandra Acharya has been appointed as High Representative (Under Secretary-General) for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN- OHRLLS),” said Amrit Rai, Minister Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN, in a statement.

Acharya is the first Nepali to achieve the higher post in the UN systems.

Earlier, Kul Chandra Gautam had served as an Assistant Secretary- General.THT
