33 UCPN-M members defect to Baidhya’s CPN-Maoist

ITAHARI: Scores of local leaders and cadres of the Unified CPN-Maoist today defected the party to recently formed CPN-Maoist led by Mohan Baidhya, saying they were not given ‘suitable place’ in the party’s national convention organising committee.

All the 33 local leaders and cadres who defected to CPN-Maoist today are said to be loyal to UCPN-M Vice-chairman and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.

Organising a press conference in Itahari today, the disgruntled leaders led by Yagya Katwal, member of the UCPN-M Kochila State Committee and eastern command incharge of Nepal Republican Sports Federation, announced that they were quitting the party as the leadership had failed to address their concerns, the major one being giving suitable space in the national convention organising committee.

In a press statement issued today, the defecting leaders said it ‘is meaningless for us to stay in such a party whose leadership has given up on issues of revolution and nationality and forgotten the sacrifice made by the people in the past’.

Those quitting the UCPN-M today include chairman of Kochila state Sports Federation Dhurba Thapa, regional coordinator of People’s Council Pradip Chaudhary, regional secretary of People’s Council Men Bahadur Tamang, Sunsari chairman of Tamu National Mukti Morcha Rajendra Gurung and district member Dipendra Chaudhary.

They also accused UCPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Vice-chairman Bhattarai of denigrating the sacrifice made by the people and the blood they shed for the party.

Such an en masse defection by party leaders is sure to diminish Bhattarai’s clout in the region.

Murder accused promoted

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the office bearers of the Unified CPN-Maoist on Saturday decided to elevate Prabhu Sah as the in-charge of party’s Bhojpura State Committee. Prabhu Sah, who is close to party Vice-chairman and Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, was a minister in the Bhattarai Cabinet but was later forced to resign after hullabaloo over his alleged involvement in the murder of Kashinath Tiwari, leader of Bishwo Hindu Yuwa Sangh, in Birgunj.
