NC‚ UML warn UCPN-M not to back-pedal on deal

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress and CPN-UML today warned the Unified CPN-Maoist that all the agreements reached on Tuesday would be rendered null and void if the Maoist party backtracked on 11-pradesh model of federalism.

The warning from NC and UML came in a bid to pre-empt any move from the Maoist party to ‘reconsider or alter’ the already agreed upon model of federalism with 11 pradeshes. All other agreements, including the mixed model of forms of governance, could be quashed if the Maoists breached Tuesday’s deal, said NC and UML. Both parties took serious exception to Maoists’ inclination to bow to the United Democratic Madhesi Front, which is seeking either 14 pradeshes or 10 pradeshes along the lines of reports of Constituent Assembly thematic committee and the State Restructuring Commissions.

NC and UML leaders said they would recant to their earlier stances of six to seven pradeshes and would even disagree with the mixed model of governance — directly elected President and prime minister elected by Parliament — if the UCPN-M backtracked on the agreement.

“If the Maoists breach the agreement on 11 pradeshes, NC cannot compromise on its earlier stances on forms of governance and other issues,” said NC leader Ramchandra Paudel. “So, I don’t think the UCPN-M will backtrack.”

Paudel added that the constitution must be promulgated by adjusting the package deal the parties reached on Tuesday. “We don’t have any other alternative. The Problem Resolution Sub-Committee and the Constitutional Committee will prepare the draft of the constitution and the CA full house will endorse it.”

UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal said, “Madhes Janaadhikar Forum-Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav said today in Parliament that the prime minister has hinted (to his party) that the agreement among the three parties and UDMF could be reconsidered. It is baseless because neither the UCPN-M nor other parties have talked about changing the agreement. Even the prime minister did not say anything about altering the deal,” said Khanal. He, however, warned the UCPN-M that all other agreements would be quashed if the Maoists backtracked on Tuesday’s agreement. “If that happens, we will not be able to promulgate the constitution by the deadline, which will plunge the country into political disarray,” said Khanal.

NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat said, “If the Maoists backtracked on Tuesday’s agreement, NC will quit the government and will stick to its previous stances.”PRAKASH ACHARYA THT
