Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai today visited the scene of a massive fire in Siraha

SIRAHA: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai today visited the scene of a massive fire in Siraha and announced that the government would provide Rs 25,000 to each household affected by the blaze.

Bhattarai vowed to send tents to the affected area immediately and bring a special package to build temporary shelters. He pointed out the need to build fire-proof houses in the Tarai as large number of incidents of fire was taking place in the region each year.

About 4,000 people have become homeless after their houses were gutted by fire that engulfed Aurahi VDC yesterday. Two month-old son of Dinesh Shah of was killed in blaze. The victims have been forced to live in the open.

PM Bhattarai has directed Siraha CDO Dhurba Prasad Dhakal to intensify relief work by coordinating with all stakeholders.

After inspecting the site, PM Bhattarai and Deputy Prime Ministers Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar and Ishwor Pokharel and Minister for information and communication Raj Kishor Yadav distributed relief to the victims.

A fire engine from Janakpur Municipality was busy extinguishing the fire in today as well.

Although the Red Cross and local administration jointly surveyed the fire-hit area to estimate losses, they have not disclosed it yet. Rajdev Yadav, chairman of Nepal Red Cross Society Siraha, informed that 465 houses were destroyed in the fire while SP Rajesh Lal Karna informed that only 388 houses were gutted. Karna informed that they could say about the number of houses destroyed in the fire only after distributing emergency relief.

District natural disaster rescue committee has provided Rs 5,000 to each family and the District Development Committee Rs 1,000.

Various governmental and non-governmental organisations such as Eastern Regional Administration Office, Eastern Regional Police Office , APF Pakali, Federation of Nepal Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Marwari Youth Forum Lahan, Sagarmatha Chaudhari Eye hospital have handed over relief materials to Nepal Red Cross, Siraha.

CDO Dhakal informed that the Red Cross and the local administration will distribute relief materials to the victims. Dhakal informed that an 11- member committee has been formed to collect relief.THT
