Teachers’ union to shut down schools indefinitely

Two major teachers unions have announced strike in educational institutions starting Sunday, saying that the government failed to meet their long-standing demands.

Nepal Educational Republican Forum of the UCPN (Maoist) and Nepal Teachers’ Union announced the protest Saturday, RSS said. Members of the two unions said they were forced re-launch the protest after the Ministry of Education failed to fulfill its committee to look into the demands to give permanent status to temporary teachers and amend to the Education Act.

Gunaraj Lohani, chairman of the Forum, said they were forced to protest as Minister Sharma who is also the coordinator of the government’s talks team left for Sindhuli by abandoning the dialogue.

On Friday, the representatives of the teachers’ unions and minister Sharma had agreed to sit with senior leaders of the different parties for talks on their demands.
