KATHMANDU, JUL 06 – A majority of Janajati leaders attending a two-day national conference of the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) on Thursday favoured the formation of a new Janajati party that would advocate ethnicity-based federalism.

Over 80 percent of around 1,000 leaders representing the CPN-UML, Nepali Congress (NC) and other political parties, NEFIN, scholars and human rights activists from ethnic communities spoke in favour of a new political force at the gathering held in the Capital.

On Friday, the leaders are likely to endorse a concept paper presented by a team of Janajati experts on the formation of a new party.

The paper aims to register the party within three months, release the party statute and form a party network. It also plans to form a central committee and have members in it within 10 months. While the party is yet to be given a name, options are open, leaders said.

The paper further plans to collect Rs 35 million from its cadres in levy to run the party.

“A clear majority of the participants stood for a new party. They said ethnic people’s fight will not be possible without the formation of a separate political force,” said NEFIN chairman Raj Kumar Lekhe.

As the conference came to a close on Thursday, the leaders decided to demand resurrection of the Constituent Assembly (CA) after agreement among parties.

“The four parties have invited a constitutional crisis and lost moral ground to decide on key issues concerning peace and constitution,” Lekhe said.

“The gathering has realised the urgency to form a new party. We are also heading towards that direction,” UML Central committee member Azmbar Kanmang Rai said.

The concept paper will be circulated in all the 75 districts to gauge public opinion.

“We are not going to form a party overnight. The agenda passed by the conference will be taken to the common people throughout the country,” said NEFIN General Secretary Aankaji Sherpa.Roshan Sedha from ekantipur
