APF officer (D.I.G.) Koirala confesses to killing wife; sent to jail
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Armed Police Force (APF) Ranjan Koirala, who was arrested today morning on charge of killing his wife Geeta Dhakal, was sent to jail today.
In his confession to the police at the Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Hanuman Dhoka, where he was held after arrest, Koirala admitted he killed his wife first wife Geeta by strangling her.
Based on the confession, the Kathmandu District Court has remanded DIG Koirala in judicial custody for five days to allow time for the police to prepare a case of murder against him. Police prouduced the APF officer before the court at 3 pm today.
After police found Geeta’s body at Palung of Makwanpur, a Nepal Police squad deployed from the crime investigation division, Hanumandhoka arrested Koirala based on an application filed by Geeta’s family at Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj.
DIG Koirala was arrested from Thankot while he was entering Kathmandu from a trip outside the Valley this morning. Police investigation showed that Koirala had been spotted by locals at the area where Geeta’s body was later found.
Geeta had gone missing from her house in Budhanilkantha at the outskirts of Kathmandu from January 11.
Geeta’s family had earlier charged DIG Koirala of murdering Geeta and disposing off her body.
In a previous interrogation with the police, DIG Koirala had reportedly raised question on Geeta’s moral character.
On the other hand, Geeta’s relatives have charged DIG Koirala of having illicit affairs with other women. They had also urged Nepal Police to stop Koirala’s visit to China where he is currently pursuing a defense course, speculating that Koirala might flee from there. Based on the complaint, Koirala was barred from flying out of the country.
Ranjan and Geeta had been living separately due to a lengthy and bitter marital dispute. Nepalnews.com
