At a time when the UCPN (Maoist) leadership has not been able to hold its central committee (CC) meeting to discuss ways to avert a possible vertical split in the party, the hardliner Mohan Baidya faction has held a separate cadre training programme in the capital on Tuesday, sending out a clear message that it is not coming to terms with the party establishment any time soon.

Party general secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa presided over the training programme organised by the Newa State Council at Naya Bazaar. The training was aimed at informing the cadres about the position of Baidya faction in relation to the ideological dispute in the party and its strategies.

The hardliner leaders attended the cadre training as they refused to participate in the CC meeting called for today by party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. The CC meeting was subsequently postponed to Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Maoist sources said some moderate leaders including vice chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha and Krishna Bahadur Mahara have held a series of meetings with leaders of Baidya faction in the last couple of days to convince them to participate in the CC meeting and agree to find a solution to the internal conflict.

According to sources, while vice chairman Baidya is not willing to relax his demand for immediate resignation of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and a commitment from chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to implement the previous decisions of the CC, he has assured the intermediaries that his faction would not go to the extent of dividing the party vertically. nepalnews.com
