NEW DELHI, FEB 29 – Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is all set to inaugurate the Nepal-Bharat Maitri Emergency & Trauma Centre at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu. The centre has been gathering dust since its completion some two years ago.
Before his departure to Nepal after a three-day Delhi visit, Minister for Health and Population Rajendra Mahato said they have made arrangements for Singh and Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to go to Nepal within the next three months.
“In the next three months, the government of India will provide the CT-Scan and Ultrasound machines among many other equipment for the trauma centre,” Mahato said, adding that the ‘extreme politicication’ in appointing the officials for the centre was the reason for the delay in its operation. Mahato also criticised the Bir Hospital administration for its delay in sending doctors and other officials for training to India.
Mahato added that he has asked the Indian government to set up a trauma centre in the East-West highway and a referral hospital in Janakpur.
Mahato was in New Delhi for an international conference organised to mark India’s polio-free year.
