Maoist chief Prachand to visit India ‘soon’

KATHMANDU, FEB 27 – In his effort to mend the fences with the southern neighbour, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal will visit India ‘soon’, a party source said. The date of the visit, however, is yet to be fixed.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Jayanta Prasad on Sunday evening met Dahal to discuss the ongoing peace and constitution-writing process and the latter’s India visit.

According to a source, it has been difficult to fix the date as Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is busy with an election. The visit, if it materialises, will be Dahal’s first after resigning as the prime minister in 2009.

Dahal is willing to meet top Indian leaders to clear the doubts they may have about his Maoist party. According to a leader close to Dahal, the Indian political leadership is willing to meet him in Delhi to learn the prospects of peace and constitution as the CA deadline looms. “From our side, we want to assure India that our party is committed to completing the peace and constitution-writing process adopting maximum flexibility,” said a Maoist leader.

Some sources, however, claimed that India was not prepared to host Dahal at this point of time given its internal problems and Singh’s busy schedule. The Indian side is reluctant to fix the visit, sources

said, also because the Maoist party has long been speaking of revising the 12-point pact signed in 2005 in New Delhi, which is allegedly not an agenda of the South block. Dahal, at the same time, is unwilling to visit India until a meeting with Singh and Congress-I leader Sonia Gandhi is fixed.Ekantipur Report
