KATHMANDU, May 16: After an indefinite strike of 20 days, the agitating locals of the far-western region on Wednesday finally called off their protests after the government assured them in writing to address their demand.

The government signed a three-point agreement with the agitating locals assuring to create a single Seti-Mahakali state comprising all the nine districts in the far-western region.

“We have yet to see whether the government will keep its promise,” said Pushkar Raj Joshi, chairman of the protest organizing committee, adding, “We will launch another round of protests if the government fails to implement the agreement.”

The people of the far-western region had enforced an indefinite strike for the past 20 days, demanding undivided far-west. They took to the streets after the UCPN (Maoist) proposed to separate Kanchanpur and Kailali districts from the state to be formed comprising the other seven districts in the region.

As per the agreement, the government will provide compensation for the properties damaged and free treatment to those injured during the strike
