Political parties said Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s “unilateral move” to declare fresh CA polls

KATHMANDU, JUN 08 – The Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, along with 19 other political parties, have called on all to participate in the protest programme against what they call the “UCPN (Maoist)’s premeditated plan to capture state power and impose authoritarianism through the drama of another Constituent Assembly elections.”

In a joint press conference at the Congress headquarters on Thursday, the political parties said Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s “unilateral move” to declare fresh CA polls by keeping the CA members and the political parties, including his own party, in the dark was unconstitutional and undemocratic.

“The interim constitution has not imagined going for another CA elections. This task does not come under the jurisdiction of the PM or the ruling Maoist party or the government. It was the right of the CA alone to decide in that direction,” a statement issued by the parties said.

A day ahead of the much publicised mass meeting at Khulamanch in the Capital, the parties said it is a “historical responsibility on the part of all followers of federal democratic republic, peace and constitution to venture against the Maoists’ ill intention of authoritarianism and one party dictatorship.”

The parties said the “transformed parliament” can finalise the remaining 5 percent task, given the official declaration of the CA that 95 percent of the constitution writing work has been completed.

The statement appealed to people of all walks of life to attend Friday’s mass meeting at Khulamanch.

Speaking at the press meet, NC president Sushil Koirala said Friday’s programme will be a “trailer” and that further protests will be announced after observing the Maoists’ reaction. “Our protest is aimed at bringing the Maoists to the path of consensus,” he said.

UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal said the PM must immediately step down and pave way for national consensus. “To help save the country from entering into a whirlpool of conflict and crisis, consensus is the only alternative,” Khanal told the press meet.ARJUN PAUDEL ekantipur
