CA election on Nov 22 possible: Upreti
PARBAT, JUN 24 – Acting Chief Election Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti has said that the Constituent Assembly election was possible on Nov 22 if the political parties and the government were ready for the same.
Speaking at his hometown in Parbat on Sunday, Upreti said that the Election Commission (EC) had begun preparations for the election on Nov 22 as declared by Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on May 27. “Election will be held on Nov 22,” said Upreti. “Parties and government should gear up for this.”
Directing the EC officers for the preparation of the election, Upreti expressed his belief that the election could be conducted by March 2013 if the Nov 22 election is hindered in any way. “We are waiting for the government’s response,” said Upreti, adding, “We will begin additional preparation after their reply.”
On the occasion, Upreti viewed that the transfer and promotion of the officers after the declaration of election would be against the Code of Conduct of the EC. He also predicted that the forthcoming election would bear more costs than that of the previous one.
Upreti informed that preparations are being made to vote through an electronic voting machine and the election cost may run up to eight billion rupees. ekantipur
