KATHMANDU: A meeting of the United Democratic Madhesi Front today condemned the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the Mohan Baidhya faction of the Unified CPN-Maoist for making ‘highly objectionable’ statements against the four-point deal reached between the Madhesi alliance and the Maoist leadership on August 28.

It was the deal that paved the way for the formation of the coalition government led by Maoist Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai. UDMF also warned NC, UML and Baidhya faction not to make such irresponsible statements that have raised questions against Madhesi communities’ loyalty and commitment to nationalism.

“We urged leaders from other parties to not make such irresponsible statements. The way the leaders have spit venom only demonstrates their intellectual bankruptcy,” Chairman of Sadbhavana Party and Health Minister
Rajendra Mahato told,Stating that it was irresponsible of the leaders to make such statements, Mahato claimed the deal between the UDMF and UCPN (Maoist) was need of the hour.

“While other coalitions wasted over three years by not accomplishing the major tasks of writing the new constitution and concluding the peace process, we signed the deal in our bid to make maximum utilization of the remaining three months,” said Mahato.

He said the remarks made by other political parties have hurt the sentiments of the Madhes-based parties and the Madhesi people in general.

“Such statements, that too, from the major parties and the Mohan Baidhya faction, have hurt Madhesi sentiment on nationalism and they

will have to bear political losses in the long run,” JP Gupta, Chairman of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum-Republic, said at the end the of today’s UDMF meeting.

It may be recalled that NC and UML had, after holding their central committee meetings recently, said the four-point deal was anti-national and it compromised the national interest.

“Giving a bulk entry of people from the Madhesi communities (up to 10,000) into the Nepali Army is in line with the eight-point agreement reached between the then GP Koirala-led coalition government and the then MJF,” said Gupta, adding, “And, the Interim Constitution has specific provisions on making the national army more inclusive and democratic.”

“It is unfortunate that NC, UML and the Baidhya faction termed those issues anti-national and as process towards Sikkimisation,” said Gupta. He added that the deal had talked about the problems facing children of those people who have obtained the naturalised citizenship; development of water resources; bilateral relations with the neighbouring countries and their security concerns in Nepal; and bringing an end to the quasi-judicial authority enjoyed by CDOs.

“We have mentioned in the deal that the security concerns of our neighbours must be addressed on the basis of mutual respect and mutual interest,” said Gupta. He added that the special security plan introduced in the Tarai-Madhes region three years ago had failed despite spending Rs 3 billion from the national coffers to quell armed activities and social crimes.
