Dinesh didn’t consult me on Rail Budget, no one above party discipline: Mamata

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who has demanded that Prime Minister replace Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi with her trusted lieutenant Mukul Roy, said today no one was above the party discipline.

“No one is above party discipline. Dinesh Trivedi did not consult me or Mukul Roy (the party all India general secretary),” party insiders quoted Banerjee telling the Trinamool Congress Legislature Party meeting ahead of the budget session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

“Increase in rail fares (will) lead to increase on the people’s burden,” she said, explaining her stand on the hike in rail fares in the Rail Budget.

Party legislators endorsed the party chief’s stand and criticised Trivedi.

“Trivedi was condemned for going against the principles of Trinamool Congress and for not keeping in touch with the party,” a source said. The source, however, said no formal resolution was adopted for censuring him.

Meanwhile, the Congress has dismissed the whole row as ”problems and occasions” which are part of coalition governments.

“Pranab Mukherjee has very clearly articulated when you are running a coalition government, such problems and occasions do come. They have happened in the past…,” Union Minister Ambika Soni told reporters here.

Referring to attacks by the BJP in Parliament, she said there were similar instances when the NDA was ruling for six years.

She scoffed at suggestions the controversy had made the UPA government a ‘laughing stock’, but said it was “unfortunate.”

“I think such things should not happen, but since it has taken place, we have to deal with it. But nevertheless, the leadership is looking at it… and as soon as the Prime Minister has something which is concrete, the House will be informed,” she said, adding the principle of “give and take” applies to coalition governments.
