Morcha okay with SRC’s 10-state model

KATHMANDU, APR 28 – A meeting of the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha on Friday concluded that the alliance stands for the 10-state model proposed by a majority of the State Restructuring Commission (SRC) provided that other parties stand for the same.

However, the alliance has said that instead of the two provinces proposed in the Tarai, there should be only one. The Morcha reiterated that the basis for federation should be identity and capability, with more emphasis on the former.

According to Sadbhawana Party Co-chairman Laxman Lal Karna, the meeting also dwelt on the 10-state model floated by the UCPN (Maoist) on Thursday. “The meeting decided that the Maoist proposal would have to undergo changes to come to terms of the SRC majority report.”

Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Ganatantrik General Secretary Atmaram Sah said the Maoist proposal was vague over Chitwan and Jhapa districts. He added that Morcha could go for two provinces in the southern plains given that they are continuous. “We can accept one province for the Tharus, while the other should be for Madhesis,” he said.Ekantipur Report
