United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his concernat tensions over fed in Nepal
KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his concern at the deepening tensions and disruption of daily life through indefinite strikes in different parts of Nepal as a result of the mounting debates over federalism.
Ban Ki-moon also uttered his anxious uneasiness at the failure of the political parties in Nepal to forge a consensus over the thorny issues in the statute, according to his spokesperson.
“With time fast running out before the 28 May deadline for the Constituent Assembly to complete its work, it is imperative for the political parties of Nepal to rise above their differences and reach a consensus,” Ban’s spokesperson said.
“Having taken important historical steps since 2005, they cannot afford to disappoint the Nepali people.”
Hinting at the protracted strikes in different parts of Nepal (for and against federalism), Secretary-General has also urged protesters to carry out their protest programmes peacefully with full respect for the rights of others.
According to Ban’s spokesperson, he also called on the Nepal government to meaningfully address the escalating tensions and respond to the situation in accordance with national and international law.
“It is important to adhere to existing agreements to meet the aspirations of traditionally marginalized groups,” Ban’s spokesperson said.
“At the same time, efforts should be made to assuage the concerns of communities who fear they would be disadvantaged under a federal system.”THT ONLINE
