Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Memorial College received Indian Assistance of NRs. 4.44 crores.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 31st May 2012 between the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, District Development Committee, Kathmandu and Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation for providing Indian grant assistance of NRs. 4.44 crores for construction of college building for Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Memorial College under Nepal-India Economic Cooperation Programme. This is the 16th development project in the Kathmandu District being undertaken with the Indian assistance under Small Development Projects.
The Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation is named after National Luminary Pasang Lhamu Sherpa – the first Nepalese women who successfully ascended Mount Everest in 1993 but could not return back to the base camp and died during her descent. The Pasang Lhamu Memorial College, which is being upgraded with Government of India assistance was established in 2002 and is currently providing bachelor degree courses in Humanities, Education and Management for over 1400 students. Its existing infrastructure is old and inadequate to accommodate all the students. The new four storied college building being constructed with Indian assistance would develop the college into a high-quality institution offering affordable education to the growing number of students. Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation, a non-profit making social organisation, is working for the upliftment of backward sections of the society through a variety of programmes in the field of education, health, community development and sustainable and responsible mountain tourism in Nepal.
The project will be implemented by the District Development Committee, Kathmandu in accordance with the existing norms and regulations of the Government of Nepal. They will also be responsible for ensuring the quality of construction of the project and ensure its timely completion. The agreement stipulates the constitution of an oversight committee, comprising representatives of local development and administrative authorities as well as Chairperson of the College Management Committee to ensure the participation of the local community in the project for its implementation in a time bound manner.
In addition to this College, five projects in Kathmandu District have already been completed with Indian assistance of NRs. 2.64 crores, while work is ongoing for ten small development projects at a cost of NRs. 33.29 crores. India has also gifted 27 ambulances, 22 school buses and 3 special medical vans to various organisations in the district. Besides this, India has provided assistance of NRs. 160 crores for construction of Bir Hospital’s Trauma Centre.
Recognizing the importance of accelerating growth in Nepal, India remains committed to rendering all possible assistance in that direction. The India – Nepal Economic Programme has an outlay of over NRs. 6,000 crores with more than 425 large and small development projects completed or currently being implemented in almost all the districts of Nepal.
