A court in Bihar, India, has issued fresh arrest warrant against 11 Nepali Maoist leaders, who were earlier rumoured to have got jail sentence from the Patna High Court.

Additional district and sessions judge-9 in Patna, Bashishtha Narayan Singh, on Thursday issued arrest warrant against the 11 Maoist leaders, who were arrested in Patna in May 2004 for their alleged anti-India activity, attempt to wage a war against the Indian nation and criminal conspiracy. The Maoist leaders were lodged in the Beur jail, Bihar, for over two years.

According to Times of India daily, Patna police recently filed a petition, stating that they had failed to produce themselves before the court concerned due to which charges could not be framed against them.

After hearing the petition, the Additional District Judge issued the order of warrant of arrest against the Maoists.

Earlier, news reports said the Patna High Court had issued jail sentence – from two to three six years – to the 11 Maoist leaders. The news reports proved to be rumours. Following the reports, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai had met Indian ambassador Jayant Prasad and protested the “untimely and misplaced verdict” against the Maoist leaders.

Authorities in Bihar had filed cases against Maoist leaders Lokendra Bista, Syam Kishor Yadav, Suman Tamang, Kumar Dahal, Chitra Bahadur Shrestha, Anil Sharma, Tara Gharti Magar, Kul Prasad KC. Min Chapagain, Hit Badadur Tamang and Dilip Maharjan, after arresting them from different hotels in Patna in may 2004. They were released after the political change in Nepal.

Among them, Bista and Tamang are former ministers and central committee members, KC is a politburo member, Gharti Mabar is a lawmaker while Maharhan is a general secretary of the Young Communist League.
