The man who is largely credited with resuscitating an otherwise dying Bhojpuri film industryis now mulling a sabbatical. Mirror can reveal that superstar and leading light of nearly 165 Bhojpuri films, Ravi Kishen, has decided to call it quits, at least for the time being.

What prompted such an extreme decision? Apparently, the actor is disappointed with the quality of the new crop of Bhojpuri films. Speaking to Mirror at length, Ravi Kishen said, “I have everything in the Bhojpuri film industry and am enjoying the kind of success that very few people dream of. But I am not getting the kind of scripts I am longing to do. I am bored of routine work and doing the same kind of films over and over again. After 165 films in the last eight years, I want to do something more.”

Is it just boredom or the lure of B-town? The actor said candidly, “The commitments in Hindi cinema are also keeping me busy. But my whole aim is to take the Bhojpuri industry to the next level and give back to it what it has given me, right from my house to the cars I drive to the respect I have earned. However my concern is although the industry is growing money-wise, it still lacks the respect that Tollywood or Mollywood command. Yes, these films made me what I am today and are still box office successes. But I guess it’s time for me to put a full stop somewhere.”

Ask him whether this means he will never return to Bhojpuri films and Kishen is quick to say, “Never say never. I am definitely not accepting any new films right now and I have about four films on hand. I am returning the signing amounts of a couple of films I have signed. I have always maintained Hindi cinema is my father and Bhojpuri cinema is my mother. I can never leave my mother so I will always be involved in the Bhojpuri industry but mainly as a producer. I will be producing films at regular intervals. I will only act in a Bhojpuri film if the script is out-of-the-box and is capable of taking the industry one step forward.”

After more than 100 Bhojpuri films, isn’t it a bit of a harsh stance to take? Kishen replies, “In the past two to three years, I have worked with filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, Shyam Benegal, Vikram Bhatt, Rajkumar Santoshi, Sriram Raghvan and Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi. I have learnt where the Bhojpuri industry is headed. I believe if films are made in the right way, even our industry can make path-breaking cinema. I know it is a harsh step but I am ready to be the man to do it. I have done it before and I am ready to do it again.”
