UCPN (Maoist) has claimed that the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPAA) was in the national interest.

KATHMANDU, OCT 22 – The UCPN (Maoist) has claimed that the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPPAA) was in the national interest.
The party claimed that the agreement between Nepal and India was as per the party’s interest and was an effort aimed at economic revolution in the country.

Talking to eKantipur on Saturday, Maoist Spokesperson Dina Nath Sharma claimed that it was inappropriate to protest the BIPPA without analysing its contents and far reaching impacts and strategic benefits.

He pointed out that the wrong culture of protesting for the sake of protest by opposition parties is on the rise in Nepal.

“Even if the ruling party plans a good work, the opposition parties, especially in Nepal, have to oppose and criticise it,” said Sharma. “Now, regarding the BIPPA, we have to principally reach consensus on the security and profit of an investment.”

He went on to claim that the BIPPA was approved by the Standing Committee meeting of the party prior to Bhattarai’s India visit and the deal has been reached abiding by the international norms and values.

Meanwhile, the faction led by Maoist Vice Chairman Mohan Baidya has strongly objected to the deal reached between India and Nepal.

Maoist Secretary CP Gajurel, who is considered close to Baidya, tagged the BIPPA as “anti-national.”

The Maoist faction that has been accusing the four-point agreement between the party and the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha as unpatriotic has now tagged the BIPPA as “anti-national.”

Speaking at a programme organised in the Capital today, the Maoist secretary said, “Our party does not know anything about the agreement that was signed by the prime minister.” He added that his party had not advised him to forge an agreement “against the national benefit.”Ekantipur Report
